Frequently Asked Questions

Water Damage Restoration FAQ

Answers to the questions San Diego homeowners, landlords, and property managers ask most often after discovering water damage.

Emergency & First Steps

What should I do immediately after discovering water damage?

If it's safe, shut off the water source and, if standing water is near electrical outlets or wiring, avoid the area. Move valuables away from the affected area if you can do so safely, then call Agee Restoration Services at 619-399-0516 so we can begin inspection and mitigation.

How quickly should water damage be addressed?

As soon as possible. Water can begin affecting drywall, flooring, and other materials within hours, and the risk of mold growth and further structural damage increases the longer water sits untreated.

What information should I provide when calling for emergency service?

It helps to know the general source of the water if known, which areas of the property are affected, and whether the water has been stopped. If you don't have all the details, that's okay — we'll ask what we need when you call.

Is water damage restoration available at night or on weekends?

Yes. Agee Restoration Services answers emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

The Restoration Process

How does professional structural drying work?

We use air movers to increase evaporation from wet surfaces and dehumidifiers to remove the resulting moisture from the air, while monitoring moisture levels with meters throughout the process. Learn more on our Structural Drying page.

How do technicians determine whether materials can be dried or need to be removed?

We assess saturation levels using moisture meters and thermal imaging, along with the material type and how long it's been wet. Solid materials like framing lumber can often be dried in place, while heavily saturated porous materials like insulation may need to be removed.

How long can water damage restoration take?

It depends on the extent of the damage, the water category and class involved, and whether reconstruction is needed. Drying alone often takes several days at minimum; projects requiring demolition and reconstruction take longer. We provide a project-specific estimate after inspection.

What is moisture monitoring?

Moisture monitoring is tracking moisture levels in affected materials throughout the drying process with moisture meters, so we can confirm materials are drying at the expected rate and know when they've reached an acceptable dry standard.

Can water damage affect drywall and flooring?

Yes. Drywall absorbs water readily and can lose structural integrity or develop mold growth if it stays wet. Flooring reacts differently by material — solid hardwood may be salvageable if dried quickly, while materials like particleboard subfloor are more prone to permanent damage.

What happens after a pipe bursts?

We first confirm the water source is stopped, then extract standing water and assess how far it traveled, including behind walls and under flooring. From there we set up drying equipment and monitor the area until it reaches a dry standard.

Do you perform reconstruction after mitigation?

Yes. When a project involves demolition of materials like drywall, we offer restoration and reconstruction services — including drywall repair — to help return the space to its pre-loss condition.

Insurance

Will my insurance cover water damage restoration?

It depends on the cause of loss and your specific policy — that determination is made by your insurance company, not by us. We can help by documenting the damage thoroughly, which supports the claims process.

Do you work directly with insurance companies?

We can provide the documentation — photos, moisture readings, and a description of work performed — that adjusters typically request. We're not a party to your insurance policy, so coverage and payment decisions are between you and your insurer.

Should I call my insurance company or Agee Restoration Services first?

Either order works. Many customers call us first to begin mitigation and limit further damage, then notify their insurer; others contact their insurance company first. We recommend starting both as soon as possible.
